Stacey’s Book

WAM

In my counseling practice, I found myself telling client after client the same things. This book is the result of my realization! Inside, find solutions and inspirations such as:

  • Why lack of Self-care is the root of all problems
  • Dealing effectively with feeling overwhelmed
  • Getting out of your children’s shadow
  • Self-care essentials

Excerpt:

Lack of Self-care is basically disempowering your Self. Somewhere, somehow, you came to believe that you are not the most important person on the face of the Earth. Others may say that you are the most important person in the world to them…until you lose favor. Besides, the only person that you are 100% guaranteed to be with every second of every day is YOU. Why shouldn’t you be the most important person in your life? Why shouldn’t you be numero uno…the big cheese…the head honcho?

Most people were conditioned early on to put themselves after others. We think about the great humanitarians in history…Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus Christ…and we get images of these saintly people, tirelessly serving others. However, if you read a little about their lives, you will see that in reality, they always put themselves first, which is how they were able to be so available to help other people and humanity in general.

Many times, when I talk to someone about Self-care, they tell me that it sounds “selfish.” Well, yes and no. Dictionary.com defines selfish as “devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one’s own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.” Self-care, on the other hand, is more about being devoted to caring for oneself first, before turning to the concerns of others. Let’s face it – what other people need from us rarely involves something urgent or life-threatening, even though that person may think it is.

Even on airplanes, the flight attendants instruct the passengers that in the event of a cabin pressure change, they are supposed to put their own oxygen masks on first before helping anyone that needs assistance. Why? Because you won’t be able to help much if you are unconscious from lack of oxygen, your mask dangling a few inches from your face, unused. If you put your mask on first, then you can help everyone that is sitting around you if they need it.

It’s the same basic concept when you talk about Self-care. If you are replenished and feeling at peace, then you will have more inner resources to devote to projects and people outside of your Self. You will have more energy, feel happier, be healthier, have more Self-confidence and will overcome obstacles and problems more quickly and easily than if you hadn’t taken care of your Self.

I am asking you to read on with an open mind and the idea that you are indeed the most important person in your life. As I go over the topics in this book, you may think I am asking you to be selfish. You are correct. I want you to be as Self-ish as you can from now on. Employ the strategies presented here. You will find that you will be so much more fulfilled for it, and your cup will overflow so that you will be able to be there for the important people in your life when they need you. That I can promise you.
